Scarborough gansey scarf

£55.00

I designed this scarf based upon the gansey jumpers connected with Scarborough.

A gansey is a hand knitted, woollen jumper traditionally worn by fishermen. By the 19th century fishing communities had developed their own favoured gansey designs. The patterns created were inspired by everyday objects used by the fishermen, such as ropes, chains, ladders, sand prints, herringbones, anchors and netting.

This gansey inspired design was created using the traditional patterns associated with Scarborough. The ganseys of Scarborough are not intricate in design which I think makes them more easily identifiable. The scarf has a step stich edge which continues up the edges with a traditional moss stitch running through the middle.

Made from 100% new British wool, woven from fleece to yarn in Yorkshire, then knitted in Yorkshire by a Yorkshire lass (me). It is undyed wool, reducing any environmental impact and is a sustainable product. The wool is super chunky and creamy white in colour. From Blue face Leicester sheep which produces a fleece akin to mohair.

It is super soft and very cosy. Long in length and a good width. A scarf with it’s own proud Yorkshire story to tell.
