Ribblesdale throw

£250.00

I drew inspiration for this design from the traditional knitting patterns still preserved in a pair of gloves from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Hand knitting was once an everyday craft industry taking place in the Yorkshire Dales. Very few products remain to this day which show the skill and intricate designs once in common use. I have created a range of luxury throws reflecting these patterns. Using just one colour and translating the two colour designs into knit and purl relief. With a ribbed surrounding border to pay homage to the cuff.

I created the Ribblesdale throw taking an element from the gloves. the pattern zig zags in parallel rows through the throw. In between the zig zags are hollow diamonds. Between these parallel patterns is a small cross stitch, reflecting the ‘flies’ found in many traditional patterns from this era.

This throw was knitted using Jacob wool, a naturally piebald fleece with the colour grey being selected. The wool is undyed and was woven from fleece to yarn in Yorkshire. The throw weighs approximately 1.4 kg and took around 14 hours to knit using just two knitting needles. It is in a super chunky yarn which is beautifully warm and cosy to snuggle under. You would definitely be toast on top of one of the three peaks with this wrapped around you.

Hand knitted in Yorkshire by a proper Yorkshire lass.
