Pure new wool hand knitted Dentdale throw
£290.00
A designer hand knitted throw created using natural British wool and traditional heritage Yorkshire designs with a Dentdale twist.
Hand knitting was once an everyday craft taking place in the Dales. Unfortunately very few products remain from that time which show the skill and intricate designs used. Drawing inspiration from these traditional knitting designs, still preserved in gloves from the 19th and 20th centuries, I have created a special range of luxurious throws. Using just one colour and translating the two colour designs into knit and purl stitches means the throws are reversible. With a ribbed border surrounding the central pattern.
The throw was hand knitted using Jacob wool, a naturally piebald variety, the colour grey just being selected. The wool is undyed maintaining it’s natural beauty. It is from British sheep, conforming to British quality standards and farming practices. Woven from fleece to yarn in Yorkshire and knitted by a Yorkshire lass. It weighs just under 1.6 kilograms and is in a super chunky thickness of wool. Using two knitting needles it took over 17 hours to knit.
The Dentdale throw draws inspiration from a pair of gloves made in Dent in 1933. The diamond design contains a small cross with panels heading up through the throw. Children in the Dales first learnt the art of knitting in special schools before the industrial revolution took hold. They learnt how to knit gloves that came off the needle as a completed article. The knitters of Dent gained renown and were even called the “terrible knitters of Dent”, with terrible meaning serious or awesome. Photographed throw opened over a Super King sized bed.
